When transitioning from CADWorx Plant to AutoCAD Plant 3D, the first question that always arises is:
“How do I convert my CADWorx Specifications to AutoCAD Plant 3D Specifications?”
The second question is always:
“How much will it cost?”

These two platforms are both capable of routing industrial piping and producing deliverables, but it is almost impossible to keep descriptions, part numbers, and even weights the same between them. Those who have searched for an automated solution have come to the realization that Modern CADWorx Specifications (>2012) cannot be converted to AutoCAD Plant3D Specifications using the AutoCAD Plant 3D Specification Editor Importer. Further, a simple web search reveals the following reasons in all Technical Posts:
- Not possible for CADWorx Specification newer than 2012.
- From the CADWorx proponent: Why would you want to switch?
- From the AutoCAD Plant 3D proponent: Create the Specs using the native system to reap the benefits.
- Access to the CADWorx Catalog is limited sometimes so completing the conversion with just the CADWorx Prj is not feasible without the Catalog.
In all cases, there is much discussion and little progress to make it happen. The implications are labor-intensive and costly!
No doubt, CADWorx and AutoCAD PLANT 3D are different. They take different paths, but eventually get to the same place: drawing specification driven piping components with properties!
